UK Classics (Part Fourteen)

Same old boring Sunday morning
Old man's out washing the car
Mum's in the kitchen cooking Sunday dinner
Her best meal moaning while it lasts
And Johnny's upstairs in his bedroom sitting in the dark
Annoying the neighbours with his punk rock electric guitar
This is the Sound of the Suburbs....

Today's UK classic is another from the punk era featuring The Members with their biggest hit "The Sound Of The Suburbs". I remember buying this when it came out in 1979 and it was wildly popular, flying up the national charts where it reached the number twelve position.

Whereas many punk songs had pretty rudimentary lyrics, this song accurately captured the feelings of teenagers like me, both alienated from not only much of society but often from their families too. The Members' other notable 45 "Solitary Confinement" expressed similar sentiments of isolation, relating the experiences of living in a lonely bedsit. Both songs still stand the test of time from those days.
